Andrew Bailey and Kash Patel

Kash Patel’s Co-Deputy Director Is Leaving the FBI After One Year

Bailey Announces His Exit

Andrew Bailey, the FBI’s co-deputy director, announced Monday that he is stepping down after one year in the job. He said he is leaving to spend more time with his family in Missouri. Bailey is a father of four and previously served as Missouri’s Republican attorney general from Jan. 2023 to Sept. 2025, before joining the Bureau. His resignation is set to take effect on Oct. 2, according to two anonymous sources familiar with the matter who spoke to Bloomberg Law.

Bailey Credits Trump and Patel

In an X post, Bailey thanked President Donald Trump, Todd Blanche, and FBI Director Kash Patel for the chance to serve. He said the administration had delivered “historic results” in the mission to “Make America Safe Again” and expressed pride in the work completed. Bailey also said he was confident Patel would continue reforming the FBI, fighting violent crime, defending the homeland, ensuring organizational accountability, and restoring public trust. The post presented the move as a return to family life, not as a public break with the Bureau’s stated direction.

Patel Praises Bailey as Reports Point to Tension

Patel responded on X by thanking Bailey for his service and saying his contribution to critical reforms would continue to matter. He said Bailey’s leadership would be missed and praised him for answering the call to serve. That warm public exchange sits beside reporting from The New York Times that anonymous sources described tension between the two men, including periods when they went without speaking. The FBI did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment. In other words, the official statements were polished, while the unofficial account was considerably less tidy.

Another Turn in the Deputy Director’s Office

Bailey’s departure follows other movement in the FBI’s senior ranks. Conservative podcast host Dan Bongino served as deputy director from March 2025 until leaving the role in January, overlapping with Bailey’s tenure for three and a half months. FBI Co-Deputy Director Christopher Raia succeeded Bongino. The sequence gives Patel another leadership change to manage as he pursues the reforms described in the public statements, while the Bureau must also keep its core work moving. Federal agencies, it seems, do not pause operations just because the organizational chart needs another edit.

Why It Matters

Leadership changes inside a major federal law-enforcement agency matter because they can affect priorities, accountability, and the confidence of the people expected to work under them. Bailey’s stated reason is family, and that deserves to be taken at face value. At the same time, reports of strained communication between him and Patel create a second question about how smoothly the Bureau’s reform agenda was being carried out.

The public statements are notably courteous. Bailey praised Patel’s direction, while Patel praised Bailey’s service and reforms. That is the official record. The anonymous-source accounts suggest there may be more to the working relationship, but they do not establish the reason for Bailey’s decision. Readers are left to separate documented announcements from background reporting, a chore the modern news business often treats as optional.

The immediate issue is continuity. Patel now has to maintain the Bureau’s stated reform effort while handling another change in senior leadership. Employees, lawmakers, and the public will watch whether Bailey’s departure changes that direction or proves to be a personal decision with limited institutional effect. The lack of an immediate FBI comment offers no extra clarity.
