Firearms instructor appears to handle a loaded handgun while training students in a classroom

Instructor Flouts Basic Safety Rules in Jaw-Dropping 45 Seconds

A Training Video Raises Immediate Questions

A short video posted to X by TácticaYSeguridadGT, a Guatemalan self-defense training company, shows a Spanish-speaking firearms instructor working with students. The instructor appears to be affiliated with ECOLVIP, a Colombian company that trains security guards. In less than a minute, he handles what appears to be a Beretta 92 or a clone while moving the gun around a confined classroom. The setting matters because instructors are expected to model the habits students may later use on their own. Instead, the footage appears to show a real firearm loaded with live ammunition in a room with multiple students. Dummy firearms are available and reasonably cheap, making the choice of a loaded weapon in that setting difficult to defend. The video does not establish every detail of the training session, but the conduct visible in the clip raises serious questions about the safety standards being taught.

Three Core Safety Rules Are Put at Risk

The report identifies at least three basic firearms safety concerns. First, the instructor appears to use a real, loaded firearm during classroom instruction rather than a dummy training weapon. Second, his muzzle control appears absent. He repeatedly sweeps the gun across the room, including across a female student seated near a table. Keeping the muzzle pointed in a safe direction is a central firearms safety rule. Third, the instructor fires a round while waving the handgun around. The shot reaches the target, but the footage suggests his finger was on the trigger at some point during the movement. Hitting the intended target does not erase the danger created by unsafe handling. A training exercise should show students how to control a firearm before any shot is taken, not leave them to distinguish competence from luck.

Safety Standards Are Supposed to Mean Something

The video is especially troubling because firearms safety has improved over time, according to CDC data cited in the report. Accidental firearm deaths fell from 824 in 1999 to 450 in 2024, a decline of almost 50 percent. Those figures do not make negligent instruction acceptable, but they underscore why basic safety practices matter. The NRA says firearms training should be safe, enjoyable, and rewarding, and its policy allows certification to be revoked when instructors disregard safety rules, use live ammunition in a training classroom, provide inadequate training, have a negligent discharge, or bring discredit to the NRA or its training program. Those standards exist to protect students and preserve trust in firearms instruction. They also create an obvious question: how closely does the conduct in this video match the standards the instructor is supposed to teach?

Why It Matters

This matters because students often learn safety through repetition and example. When an instructor handles a loaded firearm carelessly, the lesson is not limited to the moment shown on camera. Students may absorb the idea that sweeping a room with a muzzle or touching the trigger during movement is acceptable if the final shot reaches the target. That is the opposite of disciplined instruction. The people most affected are the students in the room, along with anyone who later relies on habits learned in that class. It also puts pressure on organizations connected to firearms training to show that their rules are more than written promises.

The larger issue is accountability. The report describes a video that appears to show conduct conflicting with widely recognized safety principles and with the standards outlined by the NRA. The footage leaves open whether the instructor or organization reviewed the incident, whether any certification consequences followed, and whether the students received a clear correction afterward. Those questions matter because public confidence depends on training programs enforcing their own rules before an unsafe demonstration becomes a serious accident.
