A nurse stepped into an attack
Surveillance footage obtained by WSVN shows the attack at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami. On May 30, emergency room nurse Yanira Eguileor was walking through the hospital when she saw a male patient attacking Tisa Wolf, a patient finance staffer. Eguileor moved toward them to stop the assault. Police later identified the patient as Wenyou Rubin. The video shows Rubin turn toward Eguileor, strike her in the head three times, and throw her to the floor. The footage was later shared by Fox News in a post describing Eguileor’s attempt to protect her colleague. The video gives a direct look at the attack and the danger faced by staff before help arrived.

Hospital staff restrained the patient
After Eguileor was knocked down, her co-workers rushed to help. They restrained Rubin and placed him on the ground. Staff members then treated Eguileor themselves, performing multiple tests and scans to check her injuries. Hospital security arrived only after employees had already taken control of the situation. Eguileor’s attorney, Michael Pizzi, also said police never arrived during the attack. “Police never showed up, and security showed up after it was over and the damage was done,” Pizzi told WSVN. That account places the response in a troubling order: hospital workers faced the immediate danger, while the people assigned to provide protection arrived afterward.
Eguileor described why she intervened
In a July interview with WSVN, Eguileor said she heard a woman scream and saw Rubin chasing her toward the nurses’ station. She said Rubin was about to strike Wolf when she moved toward him and told him, “No! Don’t hit her.” Eguileor said Rubin then turned and punched her. Her description matches the surveillance footage, which shows the attack continuing after she stepped in. Pizzi told CBS News that Eguileor, a trauma nurse, was knocked semi-unconscious and left on the floor while Rubin continued moving through the trauma ward. He said nurses could have been killed. The account underscores the risks faced by medical workers when a violent patient is not stopped quickly.
The civil case includes a fight over the video
Eguileor told WSVN that she filed a $5 million lawsuit against Jackson Memorial Hospital, alleging negligence. Her first civil lawsuit cited a lack of workplace security. Pizzi also said he had to file a second lawsuit to force Jackson Health System to hand over the surveillance footage. The legal claims remain allegations to be decided in court, but the footage is now part of the public record through news coverage. Pizzi’s criticism focuses not only on the assault itself, but also on what he described as the hospital’s failure to protect staff and respond while the attack was happening. The delay in releasing the video added another dispute to an already serious workplace safety case.
The criminal case was dropped, then revived
WSVN reported that Rubin already had a pending criminal case from 2024, when he was charged with battery on an officer. In the Jackson Memorial attack, the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office dropped charges against him, reportedly because prosecutors could not make immediate contact with the hospital staff members who were victims. After WSVN’s report on the assault, Rubin was recharged. He now faces one count of battery and is being held in jail until he can be sent to a psychiatric unit. The case has therefore moved through several stages, from an attack captured on surveillance video to dropped charges, renewed prosecution, and a pending mental-health transfer.
